Brains and Boots: Eckerd Women’s Soccer Wins the Classroom, Too

Eckerd brings home a different kind of highlight

Some sports stories come with a ball in the net and somebody losing their voice. This one comes with an academic award. Keep reading. There’s no quiz at the end.

Eckerd College women’s soccer has earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award, giving the Tritons a reason to celebrate work that doesn’t usually make the highlight reel. The recognition appeared on the organization’s annual list, and it deserves more than a polite nod before we get back to arguing about soccer.

Here in St. Pete, we’re pretty good at appreciating the obvious perks of college athletics on the waterfront: soccer, sunshine, a setting that makes visiting fans question their life choices. But the scenery doesn’t handle the schoolwork. Somebody still has to open the textbook.

The Tritons earned recognition for that side of the job. No goal celebration required, although we wouldn’t object.

The work without the crowd

The appeal of a soccer highlight is simple: something happens, everybody reacts, and the replay settles at least part of the argument. Academic work offers considerably less theater. Nobody packs the sideline to watch you finish an assignment. There’s generally no crowd roaring you through the last page.

Which is why this award is worth pulling out of the athletics news feed and putting where people can see it.

Eckerd’s women compete in the Sunshine State Conference, and the source story rightly points to the challenge of keeping academics from disappearing behind the win-loss conversation. College athletes have both parts of that title to live up to. The second part gets the jerseys. The first still matters when the final whistle blows.

Let’s also keep the praise honest. This announcement is about academic recognition, not a match result. It doesn’t need an invented scoreboard or a made-up classroom statistic to sound impressive. The award is the news. The team earned it. That’s plenty to work with.

And there’s something refreshing about applauding an accomplishment that can’t be reduced to whether a shot went wide. Sports gives us enough reasons to yell at things. Here’s a reason to give credit.

Put this one in the local conversation

Whether your sports talk happens around a screen in St. Pete, at a Clearwater watch gathering, during a Dunedin tailgate, or somewhere along the beaches, the routine is familiar: debate the result, question a decision, explain why you obviously would have handled it better.

Make a little room in that conversation for Eckerd.

Next time you’re watching the women at the South Bowl, remember that the team’s latest recognition came from beyond the pitch. The soccer is what brings spectators over. This award gives those spectators another reason to appreciate the people wearing the uniforms.

No need to turn it into a commencement speech. Just give the Tritons their due: they did work worth recognizing, and United Soccer Coaches recognized it. Around here, that deserves a little noise, too.
