Brains and Boots: Eckerd Women’s Soccer Crushes the Books Again

It’s easy to look at a soccer team and only see the slide tackles, the clean sheets, and the 90-minute grinds in the Florida humidity. But over at Eckerd College, the Tritons are proving they’re just as dangerous with a pen as they are with a ball.

United Soccer Coaches recently announced their annual Team Academic Awards, and—to the surprise of absolutely nobody who follows this program—the Eckerd women’s soccer team has secured their spot on the list yet again. This isn't just a participation trophy for showing up to class; it’s a recognition of teams that maintain a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better for the entire academic year.

While some programs struggle to balance the travel schedule and the training loads with actual coursework, the Tritons have made it a habit. They aren't just meeting the bar; they’re consistently clearing it. It takes a specific kind of discipline to survive a grueling SSC schedule and still turn in a GPA that would make a librarian blush.

Kansas City might be where these awards are handed out, but the work is being done right here in St. Pete. In an era where the “student” part of “student-athlete” sometimes feels like an afterthought, the women at Eckerd are keeping the standard high.

So, if you see the team around campus, give them a nod. They aren't just representing Pinellas County on the field—they’re doing it in the library, too.
