Eckerd brought the brains, too

Not every soccer achievement comes with a net rippling and somebody losing their voice. Sometimes it arrives as an academic award, which is harder to turn into a highlight reel but deserves better than a polite golf clap.

The Eckerd Tritons men’s soccer team made United Soccer Coaches’ annual Team Academic Award list. The requirement: a composite team grade point average of 3.0 or better for the entire academic year.

That’s the story, and it’s a good one. Our South St. Pete soccer neighbors earned recognition for handling the part of college athletics that doesn’t generally draw a crowd. No dramatic finish required. Just the less photogenic business of keeping the books in order while playing the game.

Brains and boots. Turns out there’s room for both in the bag.

A team award without a scoreboard

The important word here is “team.” This recognition is based on a composite GPA, not a spotlight on one player’s transcript. It speaks to the group’s academic work without telling us that every player earned the same grades. A team average is a team average; let’s not make it carry claims it never signed up for.

The source doesn’t give Eckerd’s exact GPA, either. So there’s no need to invent a decimal and dress it up like a trophy. The Tritons met the award’s standard. That’s enough to celebrate without adding imaginary frosting.

College soccer already asks players to manage competing demands: conditioning, travel and the pressure of performing when the game arrives. Coursework doesn’t politely disappear because there’s a bus to catch. A final exam is famously uninterested in how well you defended a set piece.

That’s what makes this recognition worth stopping for. The academic year is the measuring stick, not one inspired night of studying. There’s something satisfying about an award built around sustained work rather than a single big moment.

Johnson Field gets the soccer. The classroom gets its due here.

Pinellas, give the books some noise

Whether your sports conversations happen around a screen in St. Pete, at a Clearwater watch party, during a Dunedin tailgate or out by the beaches, the loudest arguments usually concern what happened during the game. Fair enough. Nobody gathers around the television hoping for a thrilling discussion of composite averages.

But local college sports deserve a wider lens than that. If we’re going to claim the Tritons when there’s something to cheer on the field, we can certainly acknowledge them when the achievement comes from the other half of “student-athlete.” The hyphen isn’t supposed to be decorative.

This award doesn’t tell us how the next match will go. It isn’t a prediction, a standing or a substitute for a result. It’s recognition of academic work already done, and that distinction makes the praise stronger, not smaller.

So give Eckerd men’s soccer its credit. The team made the list, cleared the academic standard and gave Pinellas a reason to talk about something besides the scoreboard. Keep the applause handy for the next goal. There’s enough to spare for this, too.
