Eckerd Golf Proves You Can Read a Textbook and a Green at the Same Time

The old college-athlete stereotype took a bad bounce at Eckerd. You know the routine: all practice, no studying, with the syllabus treated like the instructions that came with a new driver. Probably important. Immediately discarded.

Eckerd’s men’s golf team has a better answer than an argument: five names on the GCAA’s list of Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars for the 2025-26 season.

Josh DiZinno, Thayne Thomas, Reggie Fear, Tyler Van Dusen and Drew Campbell all earned the recognition. That’s a proper roll call, not a lone academic standout asked to carry the entire team’s reputation into the library.

For St. Pete’s Tritons, this is a sports story with a transcript attached. The golf matters. The grades matter. Neither gets to hide behind the other, which is more accountability than most of us welcome during a friendly round.

Two scorecards, no shortcuts

The requirements make the point without needing a pep talk. To qualify as a GCAA All-America Scholar, a golfer must be a sophomore, junior or senior, maintain a stroke average under 78.0 and carry a cumulative GPA above 3.2. High moral character is also part of the standard.

So, no, this isn’t an award for locating a classroom while wearing a team polo.

There’s a useful tension here: golf rewards a lower number, while the classroom demands a higher one. Get those priorities backward and neither the professor nor the scorecard is likely to be impressed. These five earned recognition under standards that require both sides to hold up.

The source doesn’t give their individual averages or GPAs, and there’s no need to decorate the story with imaginary decimals. The confirmed achievement is plenty: DiZinno, Thomas, Fear, Van Dusen and Campbell each made the scholar list.

That’s worth appreciating on its own terms. Academic honors don’t come with the immediate drama of a putt curling toward the cup. Nobody needs to whisper over a transcript. But balancing competitive golf with the classroom is the substance here, not a footnote squeezed beneath the sports news.

A local nod, well earned

Around Pinellas, we’re perfectly capable of turning sports talk into a full-contact debate without leaving the chair. From watch gatherings in St. Pete and Clearwater to tailgate conversations in Dunedin and postgame chatter at the beaches, everybody has a verdict ready.

Here’s an easy one: give the Tritons their credit.

This isn’t a championship claim or a prediction about what happens next. It’s a clear achievement by five Eckerd golfers who met demanding academic and athletic criteria. No manufactured rivalry required. No breathless declaration that everything has changed.

If you see them around campus or at the range, a nod will do. They’ve earned a little local recognition for making the textbook-and-green combination look considerably less ridiculous than the rest of us might.
