Eckerd Golf Proves the Tritons Aren’t Just Playing Through the Easy Hazards

Eckerd brought the receipts

College golf gets the country-club treatment from people who don’t play it: nice grass, pleasant walk, maybe a nap afterward. Convenient theory. Usually delivered by somebody whose own golf game requires a search party.

Eckerd College’s men’s golfers have a better answer than an argument. They have the honors list.

Five Tritons earned GCAA Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar recognition for the 2025-26 season: Josh DiZinno, Thayne Thomas, Reggie Fear, Tyler Van Dusen and Drew Campbell. That’s a St. Pete sports story worth lifting your eyes from the television for, even if nobody’s getting dunked on in the replay.

The achievement covers both halves of a phrase we tend to speed through: student-athlete. These Eckerd players compete at the NCAA Division II level, and this recognition requires academic performance alongside the work on the course. Neither half gets to ride along in the cart while the other does the lifting.

Two scorecards, no hiding

Those requirements explain why this deserves more than a polite nod and a scroll past.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 isn’t something you rescue with a charming email at the end of the semester. And a stroke average under 78.0 isn’t the same as hitting one gorgeous approach shot, telling everyone about it and quietly forgetting the rest of the round. The standard demands sustained work in both places.

That’s the interesting part of this honor. It doesn’t ask us to choose between the classroom and the course. It recognizes players who meet the mark in each. You can’t substitute a good transcript for the golf requirement, and your short game doesn’t get to negotiate the academic one.

We don’t have individual GPAs or stroke averages here, so there’s no need to turn the names into an imaginary leaderboard. DiZinno, Thomas, Fear, Van Dusen and Campbell all earned the recognition. That’s the news, and it stands up perfectly well without extra seasoning disguised as statistics.

There’s also something refreshing about an award built around consistency. Sports conversation loves the spectacular finish. Fair enough; spectacular finishes are fun. But a cumulative GPA and a stroke average tell you something a single highlight can’t. The ordinary days count, too. Especially the ones nobody clips for social media.

Give the local guys their due

Around Pinellas, we’re not exactly short on opinions about sports. Pull up a chair for a game in St. Pete or Clearwater, join a tailgate conversation in Dunedin, or catch the action out by the beaches, and somebody’s ready to explain what an athlete should have done differently. Often with tremendous confidence and absolutely no invitation.

Here’s an easier call: give these Tritons their credit.

Eckerd is part of the local sports picture, and this is a good reason to pay attention beyond the usual scoreboard check. Five golfers earned an honor that asks them to keep their games and their academics in order. No invented drama necessary. The accomplishment is the story.

So, yes, congratulate them if you see them at the course. Ask about the golf. Ask about the classes. Maybe hold off on offering swing advice until you’ve successfully located your own ball.
