Brains and Brawn: Eckerd Volleyball Keeps the Winning Streak Alive in the Classroom

Let’s be real: being a college athlete is a full-time job. Between the morning lifts, the bus rides, and the actual games, finding time to crack a textbook usually falls somewhere between 'exhausting' and 'impossible.'

But don't tell that to the Eckerd Tritons.

The squad just picked up the AVCA Team Academic Award yet again, and while it might not come with a trophy you can spike into the sand, it’s a massive flex for the program. The American Volleyball Coaches Association doesn't just hand these out for showing up to class—teams have to maintain a year-long maintained grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale to even get a sniff at the list.

This isn't just a one-off lucky semester, either. The Tritons have made a habit of this. Under head coach Michelle Piantadosi-Lima, the culture at Eckerd has shifted into a space where the 'student' part of 'student-athlete' isn't just a suggestion. It’s a standard.

Whether they’re digging balls at the McArthur Center or grinding out study sessions at the library, these women are proving that you don't have to choose between being a beast on the court and a scholar in the classroom. In a town like St. Pete where we value both hustle and heart, this team continues to be the blueprint.
