Brains and Brawn: Eckerd Volleyball Keeps the Streak Alive in the Classroom

It’s easy to get distracted when your campus is essentially a tropical resort, but the Eckerd College volleyball team clearly knows how to lock in. While they’re usually busy putting opponents in the dirt at the McArthur Center, the Tritons just proved they’re doing just as much damage to the grading curve.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) dropped their annual academic honors this week, and surprise, surprise—Eckerd is back on the list. The Tritons were officially named a recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award, a nod given only to programs that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Let’s be real: juggling a full collegiate schedule, road trips, and conditioning while maintaining that kind of GPA isn't just "doing the work." It’s a grind. Whether they’re studying by the waterfront or hitting the books between sets, these women are setting the standard for what a student-athlete actually looks like in St. Pete.

Head coach Megan Piwowarczyk’s squad continues to be one of the most consistent programs at Eckerd, showing that you can be competitive in the brutal Sunshine State Conference without letting the GPA slide. It’s one thing to have a high ceiling on the court; it’s another to have no floor in the classroom.

So, shout out to the Tritons for showing the rest of the country that Pinellas County produces more than just sun tans and highlight reels—we produce scholars, too.
