The Tarpons wasted no time setting the tone. In the bottom of the first, Yostin Pena got on base, and then Paul Gutierrez-Contreras II ripped a double to right field, bringing Pena home and putting Tampa up 1-0. Early punch, and a tough start for our guys.
The third inning brought more of the same. Luis Escudero found his way on, and then Yostin Pena delivered a single to left field, scoring Escudero to make it 2-0. Pena, trying to stretch it, was thrown out at second, but the damage was done. Those two runs, separated by just two innings, would prove to be insurmountable for the Threshers' offense. Our pitching kept them off the board for the remaining six frames, but the damage was already etched on the scoreboard.
Pitching Duels and Offensive Droughts
While the offense struggled, let's give some credit where it's due. Brad Pacheco took the mound for the Threshers and delivered a solid outing, going 5.2 innings, giving up 3 hits and only 1 earned run while striking out 5. He kept us in the game, giving the bats every chance to wake up. Unfortunately, they never quite did.
On the other side, J.T. Etheridge for the Tarpons was dealing. He went 5.0 innings, surrendered just 1 hit, gave up 0 earned runs, and fanned 7 Threshers. That's the kind of performance that wins playoff games, and it certainly stymied our lineup. Clearwater's Matthew Ferrara was the only Thresher to notch multiple hits, going 1-for-3.
