Clearwater Threshers beat Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 8-2, no long ball required

Clearwater piled up 13 hits, Nolan Beltran went 3-for-5, and the Threshers handled Fort Myers without needing a home run. That’ll play just fine around Pinellas.

Clearwater brought the bats, not the drama

The Clearwater Threshers beat the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 8-2 at home on 2026-09-05. No home runs. No need for them. Clearwater collected 13 hits and built the kind of comfortable margin that lets fans spend less time worrying about the scoreboard and more time enjoying the evening.

This wasn’t a slugging contest disguised as a baseball game. The Threshers scored early, answered when Fort Myers got on the board, and kept adding. Singles did work. A sharp double did damage. Even a force out paid rent.

For Pinellas fans watching in Clearwater, following along from St Pete or Dunedin, or making baseball part of a day out at the beaches, there’s something satisfying about that approach. A home run gets everybody pointing. A steady stream of hits gets the other side looking for an exit.

Get ahead, then answer back

Clearwater started collecting in the first inning. Reece Moroney singled on a ground ball to center, bringing Aidan Miller home. Will Vierling then grounded into a force out that scored Moroney, with Jonathan Hogart retired at second and Nolan Beltran moving to third.

Not every productive plate appearance needs a frame and a spot above the mantel. The Threshers had a 2-0 lead, and the scoreboard wasn’t grading artistic merit.

Fort Myers pushed back in the third. Bryce Fowler lined a single to center, scoring Charlie Scholvin and sending Merphy Hernandez to third. The Mighty Mussels had trimmed the gap. Clearwater’s response was less a discussion than a door closing.

Matt Quintanar singled to left in the bottom of the inning, scoring Beltran and moving Hogart to third and Vierling to second. Then Victor Cardoza ripped a double to center. Vierling scored. Quintanar scored. Cardoza was thrown out trying for third on a relay from Hernandez through Carson Tinney to Quentin Young.

The out was the blemish. The runs were the point. Clearwater scored three in the inning and took a 5-1 lead.

Fort Myers got another run in the fourth when Scholvin’s sacrifice fly to right brought Jimmy Keenan home. That was the end of the Mighty Mussels’ scoring. Clearwater added a run in the fourth, another in the sixth and another in the seventh. No grand flourish necessary; just keep making the lead harder to reach.

Plenty to take back to the tailgate

Beltran’s 3-for-5 line gives this one an obvious place to start the postgame conversation. Cardoza’s double supplies the loud punctuation. Moroney, Vierling and Quintanar belong in that conversation, too: their scoring plays helped Clearwater establish control before the game could turn into an all-evening argument.

Guerra’s listed outing covered four innings, with five hits allowed, two earned runs and three strikeouts. Across the full game, Fort Myers finished with only five hits. Clearwater, meanwhile, kept finding ways to turn contact into runs without putting a ball over the fence.

That’s a perfectly good subject for the Clearwater tailgate crowd or the fans talking baseball back in Dunedin and St Pete. Power is fun. An 8-2 home win doesn’t need to apologize for arriving by another route.
