Clearwater Threshers Leave Chances Hanging in 7-4 Loss to Lakeland

Clearwater brought the traffic, Lakeland collected the toll

The Clearwater Threshers had enough runners on base to start a respectable tailgate. Getting them home? That was the problem.

Clearwater fell 7-4 to the Flying Tigers in Lakeland, a game that offered plenty of reasons to lean toward the screen and too many reasons to lean back muttering. The Threshers collected 9 hits, took early leads and pulled even in the sixth. They also stranded 15 runners. That is not a shortage of opportunity. That is opportunity standing outside, checking its watch.

Whether you were watching in Clearwater, settling in with fans in St Pete or Dunedin, or following along from the beaches, the frustration needed no translation: Clearwater kept setting the table. Lakeland ate.

Trading punches, then taking the big one

Cade Climie got Clearwater moving in the top of the second, singling home Nolan Beltran for a 1-0 lead. Lakeland promptly wiped it away when Cris Rodriguez doubled in Michael Oliveto in the bottom half.

The fourth followed the same annoying script. Climie delivered a sacrifice fly to score Matthew Ferrara and put the Threshers ahead 2-1. Rodriguez answered with a groundout that brought Zach MacDonald home. Another Clearwater lead, another Lakeland reply. Apparently, the Flying Tigers had notifications turned on.

Jesus Pinto’s sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Lakeland its first lead, 3-2. Clearwater still had an answer of its own: Beltran doubled home Ferrara in the sixth to tie it at 3-3.

That was the opening to grab this game by the collar. Instead, the bottom of the sixth grabbed Clearwater.

Anibal Salas singled in Oliveto. Javier Osorio followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rodriguez. Jude Warwick then singled home Salas, completing a three-run inning and putting Lakeland ahead 6-3.

The Flying Tigers added another run to make it 7-3. Will Vierling’s RBI double in the eighth brought Ferrara home again, but Clearwater could not close the remaining gap. The final was 7-4, with that sixth-inning swing doing the heavy lifting for Lakeland.

Credit where it’s due, frustration where it belongs

Beltran gets the Clearwater nod after going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He helped launch the offense, then supplied the double that brought the Threshers level in the sixth. There was substance behind the spark.

Climie drove in Clearwater’s early runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, while Ferrara kept appearing at the business end of the scoring plays. Vierling supplied the late RBI double. This was not an offense that spent the evening watching pitches and waiting for somebody else to do something.

Yordanis Guerra also deserves credit for his relief work: 3.0 innings, 2 hits allowed, 1 earned run and 2 strikeouts. That is a contribution worth keeping in view, even when the final score makes everyone reach straight for the complaint department.

Still, the complaint is legitimate. Clearwater outhit Lakeland 9-8 and lost. The Flying Tigers stranded 12 runners themselves, so neither club gave a clinic in clearing the bases. Lakeland simply found the damaging inning Clearwater never delivered.

The ride home

No need to turn this into a grand diagnosis. Clearwater created chances and failed to cash in enough of them. Lakeland broke a tie with a three-run sixth and never surrendered the lead. That is the game, without the motivational poster.

For the next tailgate conversation, the question is straightforward: can the Threshers turn all that basepath traffic into runs?
