Clearwater Threshers Tagged with 10-4 Loss as Mighty Mussels Go Deep in Fort Myers

Threshers brought hits. The Mussels brought demolition equipment.

Thirteen hits ought to buy you a decent evening. For the Clearwater Threshers on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium, they bought a front-row seat to somebody else’s home-run show.

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels launched four homers and handed Clearwater a 10-4 loss, turning an early Threshers lead into an exercise in scoreboard avoidance. Clearwater kept finding grass. Fort Myers kept clearing fences. Not quite the same return on investment.

For Pinellas fans following along from Clearwater, St Pete, Dunedin or the beaches, this was the kind of game that turns a cheerful watch-party conversation into a lengthy debate about walks. Nobody packs the tailgate cooler hoping to discuss command, but here we are.

An early lead, then the loud answer

After two scoreless innings, Clearwater got moving in the third. Matthew Ferrara doubled to left to score Victor Cardoza, and Nolan Beltran followed with an RBI single to bring Ferrara home. Threshers up 2-0. A perfectly respectable start to a road night.

Luis Fragoza promptly introduced a different agenda.

His three-run homer in the bottom of the third put Fort Myers ahead 3-2 and erased Clearwater’s cushion before anybody could get comfortable. That was the first big swing of the game, and it belonged to the hitter Clearwater would have preferred to stop seeing.

The Threshers did answer. In the fourth, Cardoza’s groundout scored Brayden Bakes to tie it at 3-3. This wasn’t an offense that folded after getting punched.

But Fort Myers reclaimed the lead on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Isaiah Lane’s two-run single in the fifth stretched it to 6-3. The damage kept coming: Merphy Hernandez, Fragoza again and Quentin Young all homered, and the Mussels held a 10-3 lead by the end of the seventh.

Clearwater added a run in the ninth. It improved the final score, not the evening.

The third-inning homer was the first reversal. The bigger problem was everything Clearwater allowed after fighting back to a tie. A wild pitch, a two-run single and more balls disappearing over the fence left the Threshers chasing a game that kept accelerating away.

Beltran delivered. The formula didn’t.

Beltran deserves his credit without the usual consolation-prize wrapping. A 3-for-4 night with an RBI is useful work, even when the scoreboard makes everyone want to change the subject. Ferrara’s run-scoring double mattered, too. Clearwater created offense; it simply didn’t get enough runs from it.

Youngerman recorded five strikeouts across his four innings. Across the staff, though, seven walks and four opposing homers were too much to absorb. Free traffic and long balls make an expensive combination.

Fragoza was the centerpiece of that bill. Two homers and four RBIs will wreck plenty of evenings, and he thoroughly wrecked this one.

The takeaway isn’t that Clearwater forgot how to hit. Thirteen hits say otherwise. The Threshers needed more payoff from their opportunities and fewer gifts from the mound. Fort Myers made those shortcomings hurt.
