Clearwater Threshers’ Rally Falls Short in 2-1 Squeaker Against Mighty Mussels

Clearwater brought the traffic, not the payoff

The Clearwater Threshers went to Fort Myers on Tuesday night and found a particularly irritating way to lose a road-series opener: allow four hits, collect five, and still walk away on the wrong end of a 2-1 score.

That’s not getting run out of the ballpark. That’s spending the evening rattling the doorknob without ever finding the key.

The Mighty Mussels did their scoring early. Clearwater answered quickly. Then the scoreboard became decorative. For Threshers fans following from Clearwater, watching around St. Pete or talking baseball out on the beaches, the complaint practically writes itself: the pitching gave them a chance. The offense left that chance standing on base.

This was a close game, but close doesn’t make the ride home any shorter.

An early dent that never came out

Fort Myers put the Threshers in a hole in the bottom of the first. Vahn Lackey’s sacrifice fly brought home Yovanny Duran, and Luis Fragoza followed with a line-drive double to left that scored Ramiro Dominguez. Just like that, the Mighty Mussels had a 2-0 lead.

Clearwater’s response arrived in the top of the second. Macon Winslow doubled in Caden Bogenpohl, trimming the deficit to 2-1 and giving the evening the appearance of a game that might loosen up.

It did not.

Neither team scored over the remaining seven innings. Fort Myers had already done enough, although Clearwater spent the rest of the night making that conclusion feel avoidable.

Bogenpohl finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, providing a welcome bit of production in an otherwise stubborn lineup. Winslow supplied the run-scoring hit. The trouble was finding a follow-up act. The Threshers didn’t need an offensive fireworks show; they needed another ball to fall at the right time.

Pacheco kept the argument alive

Brad Pacheco’s line deserves better than a shrug at the loss column. He worked 5.0 innings, allowed 3 hits and 2 earned runs, and struck out 4. Both Fort Myers runs came in that opening inning, but the game never got away from Clearwater.

That matters. An early deficit can become an excuse in a hurry. Pacheco kept it small enough to remain a problem the bats could solve.

Clearwater’s pitching finished with 7 strikeouts, and the Mighty Mussels managed only 4 hits all night. There was no requirement here for the Threshers to trade haymakers. Their pitchers kept the bill reasonable. The offense still couldn’t cover it.

The sour number is the 13 runners Clearwater left on base. That’s the fuel for the postgame debate, whether it’s happening around a Clearwater tailgate or among fans watching in Dunedin. You can argue about the early runs, but the opportunities afterward are harder to wave away.

A baserunner is a possibility, not a payment. Clearwater had plenty of possibilities.

Another crack, same assignment

The Threshers get another shot at the Mighty Mussels tomorrow night. The assignment isn’t mysterious: turn the traffic into runs before another winnable game slips away.

There’s no need to dress this up as a grand verdict on Clearwater. It was a tight road loss with useful pitching, an early answer and far too many unfinished trips around the bases. Frustrating? Absolutely. Complicated? Not especially.
