Clearwater Threshers Fall to Tarpons 4-2: Late Rally Meets Puello’s Last Word

Clearwater brings the drama, Tampa takes the win

The Clearwater Threshers gave BayCare Ballpark a reason to get loud in the eighth inning. Luis Puello gave everybody a reason to stop enjoying themselves in the ninth. Not exactly neighborly behavior.

Tampa left with a 4-2 win, the bragging rights and a fairly straightforward explanation for both: Puello hit the ball out twice, and the Tarpons’ pitching kept Clearwater quiet long enough for those swings to matter.

This was a Florida State League scrap with good arms, scarce opportunities and a late rally that briefly made the whole evening feel salvageable. Whether your baseball routine starts with a Clearwater tailgate or watching from St Pete, Dunedin or the beaches, you know the feeling: settle in, start believing, then watch the opposing slugger ruin a perfectly good conversation.

The hole came early; the answer came late

Puello opened the scoring in the top of the second, sending his 11th home run of the season to left for a 1-0 Tampa lead. Matthew Fisher otherwise gave Clearwater a sturdy start: 4.0 innings, 2 hits, 1 earned run and 6 strikeouts. That is useful work. It just came with an expensive souvenir for somebody beyond left field.

The trouble was that Clearwater had even less room to operate against Justin West. Tampa’s starter went 6.0 innings, allowed 1 hit and no earned runs, and struck out 7. The Threshers weren’t losing a slugfest. They were trying to find the door into the game.

Tampa kept adding to the bill. Yostin Pena singled to center in the fifth to score Dax Kilby, making it 2-0. A seventh-inning force out brought Tyce Armstrong home and stretched the advantage to 3-0.

Then Clearwater finally answered. Victor Cardoza singled home Romeli Espinosa in the bottom of the eighth. Jack Hopko followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Cardoza, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Now there was something to work with. The crowd had a rally, Tampa had a narrow lead, and a game that had spent most of the evening belonging to the visiting pitchers suddenly had some local noise in it.

Puello promptly interrupted. His second homer of the night, in the top of the ninth, pushed Tampa’s lead to 4-2. It didn’t erase Clearwater’s rally. It made the next comeback a much bigger ask.

Plenty of punchouts, not enough traffic

Clearwater’s 12 strikeouts deserve their credit. So does Fisher’s start. But 6 walks alongside those strikeouts make for an awkward pitching report: plenty of put-away stuff, not enough clean passage through the lineup.

At the plate, Ferrara supplied 2 of Clearwater’s 5 hits. That was a bright spot, but with only 1 walk drawn, the Threshers had limited traffic to turn into a sustained attack. The eighth showed what they could do with an opening. West’s outing showed why that opening took so long to arrive.

Puello gets the player-of-the-game nod, however reluctantly Clearwater fans care to hand it over. He started Tampa’s scoring and delivered the insurance after the Threshers had made things uncomfortable. Hard to argue with that résumé. Easier to dislike it.

No grand season verdict is needed here. Clearwater fought back, Tampa answered, and the home crowd got the wrong ending. The Threshers will look to bounce back next game; check the schedule for details.
