The White Sox brought the fireworks. The Rays supplied the place to set them off.

Chicago hit four home runs and handed Tampa Bay a 6-1 loss at the Trop, a home game that felt an awful lot like somebody else’s party. The Rays managed four hits and one run. That’s not much offense to carry into a slugging contest, unless the plan was to win on manners.

Chicago took the room early

The White Sox led 1-0 after the top of the first and made it 2-0 in the second. Then came the third: two more Chicago runs, a 4-0 lead and a distinct shortage of breathing room for the home side.

That was the inning that changed the assignment. Tampa Bay wasn’t just trying to get its offense moving anymore. It needed enough production to erase a deficit that was growing while the bats stayed quiet.

The Rays got their lone run in the fourth, trimming the margin to 4-1. A foothold? Sure. A comeback? That requires a follow-up, and Tampa Bay never delivered one.

Chicago added two runs in the sixth to make it 6-1. Insurance runs are supposed to protect a lead; these practically put it in a locked cabinet. Erick Fedde had plenty to do with that. He worked 5.0 innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out six. His 91 pitches included 53 strikes. Against a Tampa Bay lineup searching for traction, he kept the game firmly on Chicago’s terms.

Nick Martinez went 6.0 innings for the Rays, allowing seven hits and six earned runs, with two walks and four strikeouts on 77 pitches. He covered the innings, but the damage came with them.

Not much to toast

Diaz contributed a hit and scored, but the Rays needed an offensive rally, not an isolated bright spot. The fourth inning gave fans something to acknowledge. It didn’t give Chicago much to worry about.

The takeaway isn’t that every loss needs a crisis meeting. It’s that falling behind early leaves very little room for a quiet lineup, and Tampa Bay spent this game demonstrating the problem.
