Thieves know these bikes are valuable, easy to move, and often secured with simple cable locks that take mere seconds to snip.

How to Lock Down Your Beach Ride

If you ride an e-bike anywhere around Pinellas County, do not let your guard down just because you are in paradise. A few basic habits can make all the difference between riding home and walking home:

• Ditch the lightweight cable lock and upgrade to a heavy-duty U-lock or a hardened steel chain.
• Tuck a Bluetooth tracking device somewhere hidden inside the frame, seat post, or battery housing.
• Never leave the key in the battery ignition, and take the battery with you if you plan to be gone long.
• Snap a photo of your bike's serial number right now so you have documentation ready if the unthinkable happens.
