Nerds on the Links: Five Eckerd Tritons Named All-America Scholars

Eckerd’s best flex isn’t the waterfront

Eckerd has the sunsets. It has the hammocks. It has the sort of waterfront setting that makes opening a textbook look like a questionable use of perfectly good daylight.

Apparently, the men’s golf team opened the books anyway.

Five Eckerd Tritons have been named GCAA/Cobalt All-America Scholars for the 2025-26 season: Josh DiZinno, Thayne Thomas, Reggie Fear, Tyler Van Dusen and Drew Campbell. The Golf Coaches Association of America supplied the recognition. The Tritons supplied the work.

That’s a pretty good answer to anyone who mistakes a relaxed campus for a relaxed commitment. You can enjoy the view and still handle business. These guys just gave Eckerd something to brag about that doesn’t require a sunset filter.

The scorecard doesn’t tell the whole story

Golf already offers plenty of opportunities to negotiate with yourself. Commit to the shot. Forget the last one. Try not to turn a bad swing into an extended courtroom drama with the club as the defendant.

College adds a different assignment: do all that while being a student, too. The academic side doesn’t disappear because the golf side demands attention. There is no helpful little rake waiting beside the syllabus to smooth everything out.

That’s what makes this recognition worth a proper pause. Not a polite nod on the way to something louder. Not the usual “nice job, fellas” before everybody goes back to arguing about sports on television. DiZinno, Thomas, Fear, Van Dusen and Campbell earned an honor that recognizes the student part of student-athlete alongside the golf.

And the list matters. This isn’t a story about a lone name carrying the academic banner for the program. Eckerd has a group to celebrate. Read those names rather than letting them become background noise beneath the word “five.” They’re the point of the announcement.

There’s no need to dress it up as a tournament victory or pretend this announcement came with a winning putt. It’s its own achievement. Let it have its own applause.

A little Pinellas pride, homework included

Around Pinellas, our sports conversations tend to find a screen, a patio or a tailgate. From St. Pete to Clearwater and Dunedin, out toward the beaches, we’re perfectly capable of turning a casual watch into a spirited debate nobody officially agreed to join.

Here’s an easy subject for once: give the Tritons their credit.

You don’t need to follow every college golf result to appreciate athletes taking care of the classroom side. You just need to recognize that balancing competing demands is work, even when the campus brochure looks like permission to take the afternoon off.

Eckerd’s waterfront can keep doing its thing. These Tritons have given the school another reason to stand a little taller. Enjoy the sunset, gentlemen. The recognition is earned.
