Country Club Brains: Five Eckerd Tritons Earn All-America Scholar Honors

Golf has plenty of ways to humble a person. Apparently, the Eckerd men’s golf squad decided a college course load should get its chance, too.

Five Tritons — Josh DiZinno, Thayne Thomas, Reggie Fear, Tyler Van Dusen and Drew Campbell — have been named GCAA/Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars. That’s recognition for keeping both the golf and the grades in good shape, not merely looking scholarly while reading a green.

Around St. Pete, we’re happy to talk about putts, fairways and the shot that absolutely would have worked if the wind had minded its business. This news deserves a little room in that conversation. Eckerd has a group doing the work that doesn’t come with a gallery, then meeting the standard on the course as well.

The scorecard matters. So does the transcript. These Tritons earned an honor that requires both.

No easy elective here

The requirements take the air out of any participation-trophy argument pretty quickly. To qualify, golfers must be sophomores, juniors or seniors academically, carry a stroke average under 78.0 and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2.

Notice the distinction: under that scoring mark, at least that academic mark. Golf wants the number down. The classroom wants it up. A tidy little arrangement, provided you’re not the person responsible for delivering it.

The source doesn’t give individual stroke averages or GPAs, so there’s no reason to start ranking these teammates against each other. The news is that DiZinno, Thomas, Fear, Van Dusen and Campbell all made the list. Each name belongs in the congratulations, not buried behind a generic pat on the team’s back.

Balancing academics with a golf travel schedule is the substance here. It’s easy to admire the idea of being a college golfer when you picture the round. Less glamorous when you remember the coursework waiting afterward. Nobody hands out an academic exemption because your approach shot felt pure.

That’s what gives this recognition some weight. It rewards more than a good day with the clubs.

For Pinellas fans watching sports in St. Pete, talking golf in Clearwater or Dunedin, or stretching a beach afternoon into a game-watching session, here’s a local result worth bringing up. No need to manufacture a rivalry or pretend an academic honor is a dramatic playoff finish. This is good news on its own terms.

Eckerd’s golfers met a standard that asks them to be serious about the sport and the education attached to it. That deserves better than a shrug before we return to arguing about somebody’s putting stroke.

So congratulations to DiZinno, Thomas, Fear, Van Dusen and Campbell. The Tritons have given the local sports conversation something worth applauding — and something the rest of us can appreciate without claiming we could do it ourselves. Our lost-ball explanations are creative enough already.
