Birdies and Books: Eckerd Men’s Golf Puts Five on All-America Scholar List

Eckerd’s kind of double major

Golf has plenty of ways to humble you. So does a college syllabus. Eckerd College’s men’s golf team has something worth celebrating from the intersection of those occasionally cruel pursuits: five Tritons have been named GCAA Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars.

Josh DiZinno, Thayne Thomas, Reggie Fear, Tyler Van Dusen and Drew Campbell earned the recognition. Put every name on the card. This isn’t a story about a lone standout dragging the academic conversation into the clubhouse; it’s a group achievement with some weight behind it.

The headline doesn’t come with a winning putt or a tournament trophy. It doesn’t need either. These Tritons earned recognition that accounts for both classroom work and competitive golf. There are easier ways to get your name into a sports column. Most involve letting the books stay somebody else’s problem.

The scorecard has company

Here’s what makes this more than a polite campus announcement: the recognition requires academic performance alongside a competitive stroke average at the Division II level. Being handy with a putter isn’t the whole assignment. Neither is being the person everyone wants in the study group.

You have to handle both sides. Golf asks for concentration, repetition and the ability to recover when a shot doesn’t cooperate. Coursework doesn’t excuse itself because you would rather be fixing your swing. Somewhere between those demands sits the actual job of being a college athlete, minus the glossy brochure and the inspirational stock photo.

The source doesn’t supply individual GPAs or stroke averages, so we’re not penciling any onto the scorecard. The award is the news. Five named players earned it, and that gives Eckerd plenty to applaud without inflating the accomplishment into something it isn’t.

That distinction matters. Calling everything “historic” eventually makes nothing sound important. This is important on its own terms: DiZinno, Thomas, Fear, Van Dusen and Campbell were recognized for meeting demands that extend beyond the course. No confetti cannon required. Though somebody could at least put down the range bucket and clap.

A little local applause, please

Around Pinellas, the sports conversation usually gravitates toward whatever is on the screen. Whether you’re watching in St. Pete, catching up with friends in Clearwater or Dunedin, or talking sports out by the beaches, the loudest moment tends to win the room.

An academic golf honor is not built to interrupt that room. No replay review. No argument over whether somebody should have gone for it. Just a result that deserves a spot in the conversation anyway—especially when it belongs to a college right here in St. Petersburg.

So give these Tritons their nod. Keeping the golf sharp while handling the classroom isn’t background scenery to their college careers. It’s part of the work, and this recognition makes that work visible.

Birdies get the applause. Books can have this round.
