Brains and Brawn: Eckerd Volleyball Keeps It Classy in the Classroom

It’s easy to get hyped about a monster spike or a diving dig at the McArthur Center, but let’s give it up for the grind that happens when the lights are off and the textbooks are open. The Eckerd College volleyball team just picked up the AVCA Team Academic Award, and honestly, at this point, they should probably just start a trophy room specifically for their GPA.

To snag this honor from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, a squad has to maintain a year-long team GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. It’s not just about one or two smart kids carrying the group; the whole roster has to stay locked in while balancing the absolute gauntlet of a Sunshine State Conference schedule.

We love to see our local St. Pete athletes winning, but there’s something extra cool about a team that refuses to let their grades slip while they're busy chasing wins in one of the toughest Division II conferences in the country. It’s a testament to the culture coach Megan Carr and her staff have built out on the water.

While we’re usually focused on who’s winning at the net, it’s worth noting that these Tritons are setting themselves up to win long after their jerseys are retired. If you see a volleyball player on campus today, maybe offer to buy them a coffee—they’ve clearly been spending plenty of time at the library earning this one.
