Bombs Away: Dunedin Blue Jays Blanked 4-0 by Tarpons’ Homer Barrage

A short trip, a long night

The Dunedin Blue Jays went to Tampa and left the offense somewhere on the Pinellas side of the bay. The Tarpons won 4-0 at Al Lopez Park, collecting three home runs while Dunedin managed three hits. Same total, wildly different entertainment value.

For fans watching from St Pete, Clearwater, Dunedin or the beaches, this was the kind of game that makes the conversation drift away from baseball. Traffic. Weather. Whether anybody wants food. Anything but another empty trip to the plate.

Still, don’t let the final score flatten the whole story. Sann Omosako gave the Blue Jays a perfectly workable outing. Tampa didn’t grab the lead until the bottom of the fifth, and Dunedin entered the sixth down just 1-0. This wasn’t a game that started ugly. It just committed to the look late.

Omosako kept the door open

Omosako worked 5.0 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. That should buy an offense a fighting chance, not a sympathy card.

His costly moment came in the fifth, when Anthony Potestio sent a solo homer to right field to break the scoreless tie. Potestio finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, supplying the breakthrough Tampa had been waiting for.

Give the opponent his due. Potestio changed the game with a swing, and Omosako otherwise kept the damage contained. There’s a difference between a pitcher getting knocked around and a pitcher getting no room for error. Omosako lived in the latter neighborhood.

The problem was that Dunedin never answered. With no extra-base hits and seven runners left on base, the Blue Jays couldn’t turn their limited opportunities into anything on the scoreboard. A narrow deficit is manageable only if somebody eventually does something about it.

The sixth brought the wrecking crew

The decisive stretch arrived with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Dax Kilby launched a two-run homer to right-center, bringing home Luis Escudero and stretching Tampa’s lead to 3-0.

Then Wilberson De Pena followed with another homer to right-center. Back-to-back shots, a 4-0 lead, and a tight game suddenly had all the suspense of a closed concession stand.

Tampa hit three homers across the fifth and sixth innings. Dunedin went the full seven innings without an extra-base hit. That’s not a subtle contrast; that’s the recap wearing a sandwich board.

The Tarpons’ pitching deserves its share of the credit, too. Tampa struck out 10 Blue Jays and allowed only two walks. Tyler Boudreau delivered 3.0 scoreless innings, surrendering one hit and striking out five. Dunedin wasn’t merely waiting for a big hit. Tampa was making basic contact a chore.

Leave the shutout across the bay

The postgame verdict doesn’t need a committee: Omosako kept Dunedin close, Tampa supplied the power, and the Blue Jays supplied too little offense. The sixth-inning barrage settled matters, but the empty scoreboard was a problem long before those back-to-back homers.

That’s the conversation for the next Dunedin tailgate or the next game on a screen around Clearwater, St Pete or the beaches. Appreciate the pitching that gave them a chance. Then ask where the bats went. Local loyalty doesn’t require pretending a shutout was secretly a good time.
