Blue Jays win the bird argument

The Dunedin Blue Jays built a lead, watched Palm Beach knock it flat, then decided that was quite enough hospitality for the evening. Final: Dunedin 4, Cardinals 3. A home win with just enough aggravation to give everybody something to discuss on the way out.

This was not an offensive fireworks show. It was a lesson in making the other club pay when the door cracks open. Palm Beach finished with more hits. Dunedin finished with the only advantage anybody came to see on the scoreboard.

For Pinellas fans watching around St. Pete, Clearwater or the beaches, this was the sort of game that turns a casual glance at the action into a full bar-stool commitment. For the Dunedin crowd, it was rather less relaxing. That comfortable lead? Apparently it came with a cancellation policy.

A walk, a mistake and a useful single

The bottom of the second gave Dunedin its opening. With the bases loaded, Raimundo De Los Santos drew a walk that brought Owen Carapellotti home. Nothing flashy. Just a free pass with a very real charge attached.

Then Jake Cook sent a ground-ball single into the equation. Between that hit and a throwing error by Palm Beach shortstop Miguel Hernández, Jake Bennett and Ryan Franden scored. Dunedin led 3-0.

That is how an inning becomes expensive without requiring a parade of hits. Take the walk. Put the ball in play. Accept the defensive donation without asking whether there is a receipt.

Palm Beach answered in the top of the sixth. Sebastian Dos Santos doubled home Alexander Frias and Dee Kennedy, trimming the lead to a run. Hernández followed with a single that scored Dos Santos and tied it at 3-3.

Give Hernández his due: after his throwing error helped Dunedin earlier, his bat helped wipe away the deficit. Baseball rarely lets anyone keep the same label all night.

Cook had the answer ready

The tie did not survive the bottom of the sixth. Cook lined a single to right, Franden scored, and Dunedin was back in front, 4-3. That lead held.

There is your turning point, without needing to dress it up as a grand statement about destiny. Palm Beach had just done the hard work of getting even. Cook made sure the Cardinals did not get to enjoy it.

He finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, contributing to the second-inning burst and delivering the go-ahead hit in the sixth. In a game with little room to waste an opportunity, Cook supplied the swings worth remembering.

Franden belongs in that conversation, too. He crossed the plate during the early rally, then scored the deciding run. Cook delivered him home when the game needed an answer rather than another discussion about momentum.
