Dunedin Blue Jays Stumble in Lakeland, Fall 11-1 to Flying Tigers

If you were settling in around Pinellas to follow the Dunedin Blue Jays, Lakeland barely gave you time to get comfortable. By the end of the first inning, this one already needed a warning label.

The Flying Tigers hammered Dunedin 11-1, building a 5-0 lead in the first and keeping the Blue Jays well out of reach after that. This wasn't a close game that slipped away. It was a runaway that sent the forwarding address early.

For the Dunedin faithful, the good news was Adrian Pinto. The bad news was practically everything happening around him.

The first inning did the damage

Carson Rucker opened Lakeland's scoring with a two-run homer, bringing Jordan Yost home. Angel De Los Santos followed with a homer of his own, scoring Chris Meyers. Then Anibal Salas tripled to drive in Jesus Pinto.

Two home runs and a triple. That's not easing into an evening; that's kicking the door off its hinges.

Dunedin trailed 5-0 before getting another turn at the plate. There was still baseball left, but Lakeland had already changed the assignment from winning a ballgame to digging out of a considerable mess.

The Flying Tigers kept adding to it. By the fifth, Rucker delivered the hit that removed whatever suspense remained: a double that scored Jesus Pinto, Zach MacDonald and Jordan Yost, stretching the margin to 10-0.

De Los Santos then hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot in the sixth. At 11-0, the shutout was about the only unresolved argument.

Pinto provided the flicker

Dunedin finally got on the board in the seventh when Juan Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly to score Adrian Pinto. It didn't launch a comeback. It did spare the Blue Jays a zero next to their name.

Pinto finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, giving Dunedin something worth mentioning without immediately following it with a sigh. On an evening when the offense couldn't put enough together, he supplied a little traction.

Across the field, Rucker finished 2-for-3 with two runs, five RBI and a home run. He helped start the trouble and made sure it stayed troublesome.

Lakeland also got three hitless innings from Maddox Long, who allowed no earned runs and struck out two. The Flying Tigers weren't simply swinging harder; they were keeping Dunedin from finding an answer.

The Blue Jays collected seven hits, but the scoreboard offers no participation credit. Lakeland had 14, and far more of its offense arrived with consequences.
